With her idiosyncratic, imaginative books brimming with whimsical ideas and human depths, Dora Kaprálová is currently the most important voice in Czech literature based in Berlin. We introduce her and her work, and also focus on her latest book, a magical portrait of a small European town—complete with a dictator and a hypnotist—as seen through the eyes of a housefly: The Maribor Hypnosis has just been awarded the 2026 EULP Grand Prize (European Literature Prize).
With this sneak preview, we get our first look at the new novel—currently still in translation—in its German version as well. “The Maribor Hypnosis” has already won this year’s Magnesia Litera Prize in the Czech Republic—specifically the main prize, “Kniha roku” (Book of the Year)—as well as the Luxor Litera za prózu (Luxor Litera for Prose). The book will be published in German by mikrotext in September and we’re hosting a workshop reading: The author will read alongside her translator, Nataša von Kopp!
