Author

Born in Moscow in 1947, he gained worldwide fame with his 1989 novel Russian Beauty (German: Die Moskauer Schönheit), which has been translated into 27 languages. In 1979, he was expelled from the Union of Soviet Writers for his involvement in the literary anthology Metropol, which featured texts by various authors banned by censorship. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he republished this almanac, which he described as an “X-ray machine that peered through the whole of society.” Additionally, he is the editor of the first Russian edition of Nabokov’s works. He writes regularly for the New York Times Book Review, DIE ZEIT, FAZ, and DIE WELT, and is considered both a critical intellectual and one of the most prominent contemporary Russian authors.
