Vocal Ensemble

Surowica is a vocal ensemble consisting of four women from Poland. For years, we have been preserving and promoting traditional folk songs performed using the technique known as “white singing.” Our music is deeply rooted in folk culture and cultural heritage, and our performances are a deliberate tribute to this tradition. We sing songs that are passed down exclusively orally—through listening and singing together—from generation to generation. They originate from Central and Eastern Europe and have been particularly well-preserved in Ukraine. There are no written scores—they are part of a living tradition. Our singing is referred to as “original singing” or “white singing.” It involves a special vocal technique that we learn from singers who have mastered this tradition themselves or inherited it from their predecessors. Our repertoire consists primarily of songs from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Balkan region. Public concerts are of great importance to us—they allow us to share this tradition and our love for these songs with others. We regard them as a great treasure and as part of our shared cultural heritage. Privately, we are four strong personalities—and that is precisely what makes our journey together even more colorful.
