Alhierd Bacharevič – Belarusian writer. Born in 1975 in Minsk. He is the author of numerous novels and essay collections, as well as a volume of poetry. In 2025, he was awarded the Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding for his novel *Europe’s Dogs* (published in 2024 in a German translation by Thomas Weiler). The novel, which is classified as “extremist” and banned in Belarus, has been staged several times in the United Kingdom, Poland, and other countries. Currently, all of Alhierd Bacharevič’s works are banned in Belarus. Since 2023, another of the author’s novels has been on the so-called List of Extremist Materials of the Republic of Belarus: “The Last Book of Mr. A.” Alhierd Bacharevič’s books have been translated into German, English, French, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedish, and Russian. They have been shortlisted for international literary prizes: the Angelus Central European Literary Prize, the City of Hamburg Literary Prize, etc. In 2021, he received the Erwin Piscator Prize (Germany), and in 2025, the Ciotka Prize for the best children’s book of the year in Belarusian. Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he published his open “Letter to Ukraine” in the Ukrainian media, which has been translated into several languages. Six books by Alhierd Bacharevič are available in German. In 2025, his latest work, “Golem aus Papier,” was published in German translation by Magdalena S. Voigt. He is a co-founder of PEN Berlin. Alhierd Bacharevič has been living in exile since late 2020. He lives and works in Berlin.
